For those keeping an eye on the Pepe's international commitments and ranking, you would have noticed that the IFNA's new ranking procedure makes the road to qualification for the World Netball Championships all the more challenging with so many of the world's top ranking countries located in the Asia Pacific/Australasia/Oceania regions.
Despite it being a year and a half away from the Singapore Championships, there has been a demand for tickets for the 2011 game, with organisers announcing the launch of ticket sales in Singapore and internationally. Tickets were made available last week (22 February 2010) with platinum tour passes for the entire tournament being available first. This level of interest must place the Pepe's squarely in the spotlight again in terms of advancing PNG's chances to attend the WNC.
PNG's ongoing campaign for qualification for an invitation to the WNC tournament in 2011 is the object for the recent interest/drive by the PNGNF to improve the profile of the game and to highlight the importance of inputs now to support the games development and work to improve the national team's international position. The newly developed Pacific Netball Series is the first hurdle in the process, other international meets with better ranked countries outside the region and a broader extension to the development of the code in PNG provides the PNG Netball Federation, the PNG Sports Foundation/Council with some interesting but exciting choices for the foreseeable future.
The sport also needs the support of you, the netball public at all levels of the game in order to send a strong signal to corporate PNG and the national government for fairness in the distribution in the annual national purse. By embracing the game here, corporate PNG will be the catalyst ccondusive to better recognition by government and other stakeholders to pay a little more attention to the sport.
The attached link takes you to the ESPN story of how demand has necessitated the early release of tickets for the World Netball Championships set for 2011 in Singapore.
Just food for thought.
