- Despite all the lip service offered on gender equality and true participation of women in society, there is one area that women have not been admitted and that is in the proliferation of sports. The distribution of funding for sports as well as the marketing of women in sports still remains heavily biased in favour of sports played by men. "Near the Hoop" has been designed to provide some balance to this bias especially by the mainstream media, by providing a conduit for news, views, information, pictures and profiles of the many great people involved in the sport. This conduit is a means by which women, regardless of where they are in the country and indeed the world, can access details of the sport's status in the country. Netball is in itself, an excellent sport but the qualities it helps develop in individuals are values that should be encouraged. Sadly this is totally overlooked by PNG's mainstream media. "Near the Hoop" is intended to bridge that publicity gap, creating a conduit to players, officials and sponsors alike so that they can properly see how a simple sport can influence positive attitudes, good values and marvelous fun.

This is one my favourite picture moments. Taken immediately after the 2007 POMNA Grand Final, Raka Nope Telstars Keeper was able to celebrate the win with her mother who had travelled from the village to be with her. It was a special moment for them, and Monte of course.
